You’ve probably watched a crew clean a building the old way. Scaffolding goes up. A boom lift crawls across the parking lot. Somebody’s hanging off the roof on a rope. It works, but it’s slow, it’s expensive, and it puts people exactly where you don’t want them.

There’s a better way now, and it flies.

We clean commercial buildings with drones, and the first thing people ask, every single time, is some version of “does that actually work?” Fair question. So let’s walk through it, starting with the machine itself.

Forget the little camera drone. A cleaning drone is a different animal. It’s a heavy industrial machine built to carry water and push it hard against a building, and to hold steady while the wind tries to shove it around five stories up. No camera on it. It’s got a spray system fed by a hose that runs up from our equipment on the ground, and that hose is the whole trick. The drone never carries a heavy tank, so it doesn’t have to keep landing to refill. It just keeps working.

But here’s what catches people off guard. The drone gets all the attention, and the water is what actually makes or breaks the job. We filter our water on-site and pull the minerals out of it before it ever touches your building, because pure water dries clean. Nothing left in it means nothing left behind, so the glass dries with no spots, no film, and nobody up top wiping it down by hand. That’s the reason you don’t see somebody on a squeegee at the top of the building. Regular tap water would dry into a mess of spots, since the minerals stay put when the water evaporates, so we take them out first. And for the green and black stuff growing on your walls, we switch to cleaning solutions matched to the surface and then rinse. That’s a chemistry problem, not a muscle problem. You don’t fix it by blasting harder.

Which gets at something that trips up a lot of cheaper operators: not every surface gets treated the same, and that’s exactly where buildings get wrecked by people who don’t know better. Hard stuff like concrete can take real pressure. Softer stuff can’t. Point a high-pressure tip at painted metal, stucco, or aging sealant and you’ll drive water behind the panels or strip the finish right off. So we don’t. We match the method to the material, soft wash where it’s needed and pressure where it’s earned, after we’ve actually looked the building over.

That look is where the job really starts, and from your side, the whole thing asks almost nothing of you. We walk the building first, how tall it is, what it’s made of, what’s in the way, where the people and the cars move, which tells us how to run the job and what each surface needs. On the day, we set up off a single rig on the ground. A licensed pilot flies the building section by section, top to bottom, while a visual observer keeps eyes on the airspace and everything around it. No scaffolding to build. No lift to babysit. Most of the time your tenants don’t even clock that it’s happening. When we’re done, we pack up and go, with nothing bolted to your wall and nothing parked in your lot for a week.

It’s worth saying who’s actually running all this, because it isn’t a hobby and we don’t treat it like one. The pilots are FAA-certified under Part 107, the federal rulebook for commercial drone work, and they fly cleaning jobs for a living. Most of the time the observer on the ground holds a Part 107 ticket too. Two trained people, not one guy winging it.

Put it all together and you can see why building owners go this route. Nobody’s working off a rope or a platform, so the biggest risk in this whole trade, somebody falling, basically comes off the table, and your insurance tends to like that too. It’s quick and it stays out of everyone’s way, with no week of scaffolding wrapped around the building. And on the tall, hard-to-reach buildings, it usually comes in cheaper than the old methods, because those are exactly the buildings where lifts and scaffolding get expensive. The higher and trickier the building, the more sense it makes.

So, back to that first question. Does it actually work? Yeah. Strip away the novelty and it’s a simple idea: good gear, clean water, the right touch for each surface, and a trained person running it from the ground. You end up with a clean building, and nobody had to hang off the roof to get there.
