If you’ve ever washed a window with a hose and a rag and watched it dry into spots and streaks, you have every right to wonder how a drone spraying water at a building leaves the glass clean with nobody up there wiping it down. The answer has almost nothing to do with the drone. It’s the water. Once you see what’s in ordinary water and what we take out of it, the whole thing makes sense.

Tap water isn’t only water. It carries dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium, along with other trace content, all grouped together as total dissolved solids, or TDS. You can’t see any of it while the water is wet, but when the water dries it evaporates and the minerals don’t. They stay behind as the spots, film, and chalky haze you recognize as water marks, and the harder the water, the worse the spotting. That’s the real reason traditional window cleaning depends on a squeegee and a towel. The hand-drying isn’t cleaning the glass; it’s a race to pull the water off before the minerals dry onto it.

What changes the outcome is what happens to the water before it reaches your glass. On the rig, it runs through a multi-stage filter that strips those minerals out, so by the time it leaves the rig and travels up the hose, it’s purified water with almost nothing dissolved in it, a TDS reading at or near zero. Spray that on glass and let it sheet off, and it dries clean. No minerals, no spots, no film, no streaks. That’s exactly why no one is hand-drying windows five stories up. The water does the work and then evaporates clean on its own.

There’s a smaller benefit that comes with it. Because purified water leaves no residue, there’s nothing on the glass for new dirt to grab onto right away, so windows cleaned this way often stay clear noticeably longer than ones done with mineral-heavy water and detergents that can leave a faint film. You’re not only getting a clean window, you’re getting one that holds out a bit longer before the next visit.

There’s one limit to be clear about. Purified water gives you a spot-free finish on the glass you’re cleaning, but it doesn’t dissolve mineral deposits that have already etched into the glass from years of sprinkler overspray or hard-water runoff. That’s a tougher, separate problem with its own treatment, which we cover on its own. For routine window cleaning, though, purified water is the whole reason the results come out clean and stay that way without a single wipe by hand.
